waters and roaming

Last week we went to the marsh, with a plan to rent a canoe and float around the waterways for a little while, with a picnic somewhere in there. Our hopes and dreams were dashed when we arrived and the shop was closed for the season. Oops.

Not to be deterred, we instead went for a walk along the Eastern Trail, which cuts through part of the marsh. We concluded that it would be a nice one to bike (it's 65 miles, from South Portland to Kittery), but the two miles we encountered were not so interesting for walking. In search of a prettier picnic spot, we drove over to Pine Point Beach and had our sandwiches there, then popped over to Old Orchard (which has a kind of uncharacteristic Jersey Shore of Maine vibe, and an especially creepy abandoned carnival vibe in the off-season) for a fried dough dessert.

Go with the flow, you know? I mostly feel super lucky that my work allows me to work from home and leaves time for plenty of roaming.

morning views

We live on the marsh (this one, but on the other side) and if you fancy a stroll in the morning it's just a half a mile down to an inlet where you can launch a boat and make your way to the ocean. Or, if you're like me and don't have a boat, it's just a half a mile down to the water where you can stand and enjoy the view and breeze.

Along the way you'll spot cattails and egrets and those birds that fly in giant amoeba formations. Also, lately, geese, who fly in honking every morning and land in the field across the street.

sunset at the marsh

Last night Kelsey called to see if I wanted to go bird watching at the marsh (this one), so off I went. We didn't see too many birds, but Kelsey's boyfriend Matt taught us a lot about identifying trees, so all in all a nice, nature-filled evening.

Remember for another time: you can rent canoes here and wander around the waterways.

My iPhone caught the sunset, too. This is why I live here. It's this pretty all the time.
